Formed in 2011, the Castalian Quartet won first prize and three special awards at the 2015 Lyon International String Quartet Competition, and in 2016 were the only European quartet to reach the finals of the Banff competition, winning third prize. They have performed widely throughout the UK and Europe, and toured China in 2013 under the auspices of the British Council. They begin with the last of Haydn's Opus 76 quartets, and are due to perform all six at the Wigmore Hall in 2018. The second of Britten's three quartets is his best known, ending with a towering passacaglia featuring cadenzas for all four instruments. Schubert's hauntingly beautiful A minor quartet features a slow movement based on his popular 'Rosamunde' music.
