Webern               Five Pieces

Beethoven          Quartet in C minor, Op 18 no 4

Formed in 2010 in Los Angeles and now based in New York, the Calidore Quartet made international headlines in 2016 as the winner of the $100,000 Grand-Prize in the inaugural M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition.  The same year it was included in the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme here in the UK.  Mendelssohn's miraculously mature quartet was written when he was just 18, while Janáček waited until he was 69 to complete his first, a dramatic work based on Tolstoy's novella.  Such is Webern's spare and concentrated style that his 'five pieces' cover a world of expression in barely twelve minutes.  Beethoven's quartet, in the same key as the fifth symphony, ends with a virtuosic finale in the Hungarian style.

This is an ensemble as capable of whipping up storms as enchanting us with breathless moments of utter magic
