PThe Michelangelo Quartet was formed in 2002 not by students, but by four already distinguished musicians with a thirst to perform this repertoire. Its Romanian leader is an inheritor of the violinistic line of George Enescu, the musical polymath perhaps now best remembered as Yehudi Menuhin's teacher, and the Quartet introduces us to the second if his two quartets. Bartók was one of the acknowledged masters of the string quartet, composing six intense works in his inimitable style. Dvořák's opus 96 Quartet, written on his return from America, is amongst his most tuneful and popular works in any form.
