Tchaikovsky: String Quartet no 1 in D

Borodin: String Quartet no 1 in A

The Borodin Quartet, whose name honours the composer of the final work in this series, is the doyen of Russian chamber ensembles and brings us an all-Russian programme.  Having worked closely with Shostakovich, it has performed and recorded of all fifteen of his quartets, the first of which was written after the famous fifth symphony.  The Quartet's cellist of 60 years, Valentin Berlinsky, continued to mentor his Moscow-trained colleagues after his retirement, resulting in a unique continuity of style.   Tchaikovsky's first quartet is famed for its 'Andante Cantabile' slow movement, which moved Tolstoy to tears.

'The Borodin Quartet, who are celebrating their 70th anniversary, remain the gold standard for Russian chamber music and the Russian approach. And, sure enough, as soon as they put bow to string in Shostakovich’s 10th Quartet in A flat, from 1964, one felt as though this was very much the way the composer heard the piece.'
